This essay aims to contribute to the clarification of obscure and highly controversial
points in the theory of value and prices formulated by Marx. The notion of competition,
after some prior theoretical elaboration, will play an important, although not necessarily
central, role in proposing an alternative interpretation for some of these questions. Before
beginning the discussion of the theory of value in Marx, I will make a necessarily summary
typification, just to provide an initial guideline, of the main positions present in the current
debate on the theoretical status of the relationship between value and price in Marx’s
work, since it is basically through the positioning regarding this issue that Sraffa’s contribution
is assimilated to different degrees, or simply ignored, in the Marxian theoretical context.
