The current scope of the State if of an extended role, with greater production of
goods and services. However, beyond a producer, the state is also a distributor and a coordinator
of the economic system. This article aims to investigate this new scope of the State
apparatus and how the current economic theories are insufficient to correctly understand it.

Este artigo tem como objetivo fornecer algumas reflexões sobre o potencial da
fronteira agrícola como geradora de emprego, tomando como ponto de partida uma análise
das tendências demográficas registradas em áreas de fronteira durante as últimas décadas,
particularmente durante o período 1970-80. Argumenta-se que a fronteira agrícola, nas circunstâncias
atuais, tem potencial limitado como absorvedora permanente de grandes contingentes
de mão de obra agrícola.

Authoritarianism and structural changes in Chile

Ever since the inauguration of the authoritarian regime, the Chilean economy
underwent a series of transformations. This article aims to analyze the new economic model,
with attention to the main relations between the stabilization program and the measures to
change the structures of the country’s economy, the implementation of these measures, and
how the country is inserting itself in the international economic system.

Cycles and structural changes in the Brazilian post-war economy: the recent crisis

The objective of this essay is to describe and analyze the main trends and transformations
in the Brazilian economy in the period following the Second World War. The first part
briefly outlines the basic antecedents of Brazilian economic growth in recent decades, as well
as the main structural problems that are present today. It also suggests the fundamental characteristics
that result from the presence of two key players in the Brazilian economic scenario:
the State and transnational corporations. The Second Part describes the major cycles observed
in the post-war period, analyzing the factors and conditions that explain the main turning
points or phases. The last section outlines the main characteristics of the recent evolution of
the Brazilian economy, as well as the conditions for an alternative development strategy. This
is the second part of the study. The first part was published in the last number of this journal.
